Pink was created by White Diamond as the last and smallest of the Diamonds, and to set the tone, Steven was told that Pink Diamond was the parts of White that she has to suppress.
Before Pink was ever allowed to have a colony, she saw the aching in her fellow Diamonds, and only wanted to make them happy. She would sing and play games and set up pranks with her Pearl to make the other Diamonds laugh. Blue, White, and Yellow were often invited to Blue's bath room to listen to Pink sing underwater, and they had to guess what she was singing. She would organize parties and elaborate balls to celebrate Blue, White, and Yellow's accomplishments and achievements across the cosmos. Blue giggled as Pink named a batch of Pyrite Fool's Gold, whereas White was furious with her.
White, Yellow, and Blue were sometimes charmed by Pink's games and antics, but more and more, they grew irritated and short with her. They would let her slide and get away with breaking some rules when it was funny, but as soon as an invisible, ever-shifting line was breached, Pink was locked away in a tower and punished. During the times she was locked away--sometimes for hundreds of years--she was accosted by Blue or Yellow, the former of which guilt tripped her and assaulted her with her pathokinesis, often making Pink beg for forgiveness and promise to never behave a certain way again before she was freed.
They punished her for not acting in any way that is expected of a Diamond--of someone who must set an example for all Gem kind and be a leader.
But, on the same vein, if Pink began to behave in the ways the Diamonds expected her to, trying to please them and avoid punishment, they became upset that she wasn't as bubbly and playful as she had been prior, and tried to encourage her to be herself.
In that way, she was constantly in a confusing state of 'be yourself, but not your ACTUAL self.' She learned very well how to sneak around and perform her games in secret with Pink Pearl, her trusted servant. The other Diamonds would often come and check on her, as a parent would an unusually quiet child, just to make sure she was behaving like a proper Diamond.
Pink understood that the Diamonds wanted her to be what they expected of her, and only said 'be yourself' to exonerate theirselves of guilt and responsibility for Pink's sadness. But she still truly loved them--as they all did love one another--and tried to continue making them happy, but now at her own expense. Without her balls and parties, or drawing them together with her games and negative attention, she felt the Diamonds were starting to drift apart, and leave her behind.
She never felt as though she was treated as an equal among them, as Blue and Yellow treated eachother, and struggled to find her own purpose. Without the other Diamonds present to hold them together, or colonies to attend to what was her purpose? And thus, what was a Gem(in White's eyes) without a purpose?
There were a lot of holes left in her life by this one question, and she sought to fill it by imitating her fellow Diamonds. However, due to her immature behavior previously, they all felt she was unfit to rule a colony, which lead to many fights, and many tantrums from Pink. Her tantrums were often as dangerous as any other Diamond's tantrum, though instead of producing any results, as Yellow or Blue's often could, Pink was always only ever subjugated back into her place at the bottom rung, and left to stew.
In the interim, the other Diamonds felt bad for Pink being upset, and instead of confronting these problems, they set the example for her that problems weren't solved with conversations or calm confrontation. They were solved with gifts, or by making those problems someone else's problem. For her loneliness, she was given Spinel. For her childishness, she was locked in a tower. For her continuing to push for respect and attention, Pink Pearl was taken. To make her stop throwing tantrums and bugging other Diamonds, she was given a colony.
She learned that problems were only to be covered up and superficially solved, and learned more and more that Gems weren't individuals, but rather tools, and it was her well-intentioned argument against this regime that put her in such a bad position. Pink believed that gems should have the right to be who they are, to choose what they want to do, and to do what makes them happy, which juxtaposed White's ideals of productivity and organization.
Pink was set up to have horrible coping and confrontational skills from the Diamonds, and while her heart always seemed to be in the right place, she was never taught how to direct her energy. She became so overwhelmed from this grief and disappointment, and the other Diamond's unwillingness to ever listen to her or respect her, that she felt the only option she had was to become someone else with no connection at all to the Diamonds.
Her time on Earth was spent un-learning these behaviors as well as she could, with real progress only being made upon meeting Greg Universe, as he was the only one actively seen to hold Rose Quartz accountable for her actions and words, and it was her decision to then relinquish her life so that she could create a half-human hybrid with Greg.
